Darwin: Evolution\Revolution

Nov 7, 09 thru Feb 28, 10

Marking the 200-year anniversary of Darwin’s birth, the exhibition Darwin: Evolution\Revolution presents the most comprehensive examination of Darwin’s life and revolutionary discoveries ever assembled.

While still controversial outside the scientific community, Darwin’s theory of evolution, as outlined in his groundbreaking treatise, On the Origin of Species, first published in 1859, forms the basis of all modern biological science. Darwin: Evolution\Revolution explores just how revolutionary Darwin’s ideas were by examining the prevailing scientific and social context at the time Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage as the HMS Beagle’s resident naturalist.

Included in the exhibition are actual specimens of insects and plant life Darwin collected on his trip; correspondences and notebooks; fossils, models, and live animals; and even Darwin’s original magnifying glass, his primary research tool.

Weaving Darwin’s life story with his discovery that all living things are related and evolve over time, several displays in the exhibition reveal Darwin’s process of analysis and how reluctant he was to publish his findings until he compiled an overwhelming body of evidence to support them. Fearing controversy, he carried out his research in isolation in his Down House study, an elaborate reconstruction of which visitors can also see in the exhibition.

Darwin: Evolution\Revolution
concludes by looking at the legacy of Darwin’s theory with multimedia displays that explain how evolution works and the controversies that continue to surround a theory that has withstood the test of scientific inquiry for the past one hundred fifty years.
