Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism - Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman

Mar 29, 09 thru Jan 10, 10

While Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman may not be household names, their designs helped shape the style of home décor and furnishings for more than a generation. The first major retrospective of their work, Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism, at the Mingei International Museum reveals the multifaceted nature of the Ackermans' prolific output.

Although they grew up in the same neighborhood in the 1920s, Jerome didn’t meet Evelyn until 1948. Having both received masters of fine arts degrees, they settled in Los Angeles where they opened Jenev Design Studio in 1952. Complementing each other’s artistic strengths, they began producing elegant ceramics with matte glazes in a contemporary modernist style.

Forming ERA Industries in 1956, the Ackermans developed new avenues for integrating their fine art sensibilities and craftsmanship with industrial practices, following the Bauhaus philosophy. Their designs quickly expanded into the production of textiles, wood carvings, mosaics, metal work, and ceramics, moving easily between abstract modernism and figurative stylization.

The exhibition comprises many fine examples of the Ackermans’ work in all media, spanning the entire length of their 50-year partnership, including new works completed within the past few years. At the forefront of the movement now known as California Mid-Century Modern, the Ackermans’ work has been featured in major exhibitions across the United States and in regional and national publications. Following in the footsteps of a renewed interest in modernist design that began in the 1990s, this exhibition provides a unique opportunity to trace the entire careers of two masters of their craft.
