SUMMARY:Farm to Craft
DESCRIPTION:Curated from Mingei International Museum’s Permanent Collection\, this Entry Level exhibition explores the global significance of grains as a source of sustenance and an inspiration to human creativity. Grains such as corn\, wheat\, rice\, quinoa\, and oats are dietary staples around the world\, their common presence forming important roles across communities and the cultures built around them. From tools used to harvest and process\, to containers used to store and consume\, each object is an example of how innovative design\, borne from a need\, and a craftsman’s own artistic eye\, intersect to produce clever results. Artisans use straw\, husks\, chaff\, hulls\, and the grains themselves to make whimsical figures and fashionable creations\, revealing how even the humblest of materials can spark endless imagination.

SUMMARY:Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World
DESCRIPTION:Photographer\, fashion illustrator\, Oscar-winning costume designer\, social caricaturist\, and writer Cecil Beaton (1904–1980) was an extraordinary force in the twentieth-century British and American creative scenes. This is the first exhibition dedicated to Beaton’s fashion and portrait photography\, which he elevated into an art form.   \nThis exhibition showcases Beaton at his most triumphant – from shaping the public image of the “Bright Young Things” (a group of exuberant and artistically inclined socialites in 1920s London) to fashion photography for Vogue and other magazines\, his vital role as photographer in World War II\, and his reinvention of royal portraiture for the modern age\, to award-winning costume and set designs for My Fair Lady on stage and screen. Via London\, Paris\, New York\, and Hollywood\, his era-defining photographs captured beauty\, glamour\, and star power in the interwar and early post-war eras. \nCecil Beaton’s Fashionable World features portraits of some of the twentieth century’s most iconic and glamorous figures\, including Marilyn Monroe\, Audrey Hepburn\, Elizabeth Taylor\, and Marlon Brando; Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret; as well as stars of the artistic and literary scenes\, Truman Capote\, Francis Bacon\, and Salvador Dalí.

SUMMARY:Painted Prayers: The Japanese Folk Art Tradition of Ema
DESCRIPTION:Painted Prayers: The Japanese Folk Art Tradition of Ema exhibition highlights one of Japan’s most fascinating folk painting traditions\, ema – house-shaped wooden votive plaques offered as prayers in Japan’s Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Most ema are small and traditionally feature hand-painted imagery of deities\, animals\, or objects\, representing wishes as general as good fortune for the coming year or as specific as the removal of warts. The objects are overflowing with color\, hope\, and humor\, including some very surprising visual puns. For centuries\, worshippers have inscribed these ema with impassioned prayers and hung them up on wooden stands outside shrine and temple halls\, hoping that the gods will read them and grant their wishes before the end of the year\, when the plaques are ritually burned. Painted Prayers: The Japanese Folk Art Tradition of Ema will present the history of this religious painting tradition\, explain the different uses of large and small ema\, and introduce the many different categories of images and the prayers associated with each of them. Curated by Japanese art historian Meher McArthur\, this will be the first museum exhibition in the United States to present such an extensive and varied display of ema\, both large and small\, ranging from the 18th century to the present day. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Icons of Imperial Russia
DESCRIPTION:Icons are religious images in the Greek or Russian tradition. They differ from devotional pictures in Western Christianity in several important ways. Icon painters worked in two dimensions\, focusing on symbolic representations\, rather than illusions of space and volume. Icon scenes are situated beyond earthly time and space\, with gold representing both light and landscape. Icons’ physical characteristics are often designed for portability\, reflecting the needs of everyday religious practices. \nThe first Russian icons were painted in the 1100s by monks in Kyiv\, the capital of the vast realm of Kievan Rus. These works were based on earlier examples from Byzantium\, Kyiv’s main economic partner. Constantinople (modern Istanbul)\, center of the Byzantine Empire\, exerted cultural and linguistic dominance throughout the Mediterranean and across the Caspian Sea. \nArtistic practices in Kyiv were strictly regulated until the 1650s. Some later icons show traces of Western Christian styles such as shading and modeling of faces. Traditional features such as the oklad\, or sculpted metal facing\, often coexisted with such techniques. Most icons were not signed by individual artists\, as is the case with all the works on display here. \nThe exhibited works come from southwestern territories of the Russian Empire (about 1721–1917)\, mainly Ukraine\, and played an integral role in daily life. Here these icons offer an immersive and contemplative experience for all visitors.

SUMMARY:My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World
DESCRIPTION:Presenting the original artwork featured in the beloved children’s book\, My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World\, illustrated by artist Salley Mavor\, this exhibition consists of eighteen hand-embroidered\, three-dimensional tableaus. Each intricately rendered scene captures the spirit of a different place and way of life\, while illuminating the universal theme of children falling asleep. Scenes range from children falling asleep on a houseboat in the Netherlands\, in hammocks in Brazil\, on a rooftop in Morocco\, on futons in Japan\, and on an intricate carpet in Afghanistan\, to name a few. \nMavor lives and works on Cape Cod\, in Falmouth\, Massachusetts. She was studying illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1970’s when an insightful teacher encouraged her to tap into her playful side. She discovered that working with stitching and soft sculpture allowed her ideas to come alive in new and unexpected ways. For most of her career\, she has followed this path\, creating stitched scenes in bas-relief\, much like miniature\, shallow stage sets\, with figures imposed on embellished fabric backgrounds. \n\n\n\n
