SUMMARY:My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World
DESCRIPTION:Presenting the original artwork featured in the beloved children’s book\, My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World\, illustrated by artist Salley Mavor\, this exhibition consists of eighteen hand-embroidered\, three-dimensional tableaus. Each intricately rendered scene captures the spirit of a different place and way of life\, while illuminating the universal theme of children falling asleep. Scenes range from children falling asleep on a houseboat in the Netherlands\, in hammocks in Brazil\, on a rooftop in Morocco\, on futons in Japan\, and on an intricate carpet in Afghanistan\, to name a few. \nMavor lives and works on Cape Cod\, in Falmouth\, Massachusetts. She was studying illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1970’s when an insightful teacher encouraged her to tap into her playful side. She discovered that working with stitching and soft sculpture allowed her ideas to come alive in new and unexpected ways. For most of her career\, she has followed this path\, creating stitched scenes in bas-relief\, much like miniature\, shallow stage sets\, with figures imposed on embellished fabric backgrounds. \n\n\n\n

Our amazing community of walkers\, crew\, and volunteers will welcome you into our Pink Bubble as you get ready to take an incredible journey to end breast cancer forever. \nYou can customize your journey with a 1-Day\, 2-Day or full 3-Day experience. Choose whichever commitment\, distance and fundraising minimum is right for you. Every step matters. Every dollar raised helps us fulfill our mission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1 DAY\, 20 MILES \nRaise $750. A great way to sample the 3-Day experience\, Sunday\, November 15. \n\n\n\n\n2 DAYS\, 40 MILES \nRaise $1\,800. Step it up for an extra challenge\, Saturday and Sunday\, November 14-15. \n\n\n\n\n3 DAYS\, 60 MILES \nRaise $2\,300. Join us for the full 3-Day experience\, Friday\, Saturday and Sunday\, November 13-15. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen you choose the 3-Day Route\, your first day begins with an inspirational Opening Ceremony where the adrenaline and anticipation of taking on 60 miles is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. The feelings of pride and strength you’ll realize while walking 60 miles through San Diego’s cool surfside neighborhoods are only matched by the spirit and gratitude of the communities you encounter and those you are helping along the way. You’ll walk along the Pacific Coast Highway and will be wowed by the beauty of Del Mar\, Torrey Pines and Mission Bay! You’ll spend Friday and Saturday night with your fellow participants in our outdoor camp at Sunset Point Park. Hotel options are available at your own expense. \nWhen you choose the 2-Day Route\, your first day begins on Saturday\, November 14 with an energetic welcome and walk out. You’ll walk approximately 40 miles over the course of two days\, with breaks and lunch along the route. You’ll join us at the end of your first day for a moving Honor Ceremony where we honor and share stories of those we’ve lost\, those still fighting and our survivors and thrivers living with metastatic breast cancer. You’ll spend Saturday night with your fellow participants in our outdoor camp at Sunset Point Park\, with an option to camp on Friday night as well\, if you wish. \nWhen you choose the 1-Day Route\, your journey begins Sunday\, November 15 where you join in with our 2-Day and 3-Day walkers for a welcome and walk out on the final day of the 3-Day journey. Or you can choose to arrive on Saturday and spend the night with us in camp. \nFor all participants\, your adventure culminates in a Finish Line Festival and Closing Ceremony celebrating all you’ve accomplished\, remembering those we have lost\, and honoring those who are in the fight of their lives. \nWhether you walk 20\, 40 or 60 miles\, you’ll do so in the embrace of the dedicated 3-Day community\, sharing stories\, eating meals together and making new friends. There’s no question that the 3-Day is a hard journey\, but we all know\, it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. \nWe walk because we must. We walk for ourselves\, our sisters\, mothers\, fathers\, daughters\, sons and friends. We walk because we can’t sit idly by watching while breast cancer still exists in the world. Since 2003\, we’ve raised more than $927 million to save lives\, support community programs\, and make huge strides in breast cancer research and access to care. \nThe Susan G. Komen 3-Day is an experience you’ll never forget. It’s why our walkers come back year after year to recommit their time and energy to put an end to breast cancer once and for all. Register and join us.
