SUMMARY:Felt Together
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the intricate bas-relief needlework and cozy scenes featured in My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World\, our newest Together workshop series\, Felt Together\, explores the art of needle felting. The series is led by Sophie Ancel\, a fiber artist who blends rich textures and thoughtful layering to bring imaginative landscapes to life. Through her process-driven approach to wool and textile art\, she brings a warm\, accessible perspective to the world of living craft. \nFriday\, January 8\, 2027 | 5-7pm In January\, Inspired by the many animals found in Salley Mavor’s tender art\, this workshop will show how to needle felt a little owl on lush velvet fabric\, and you will learn how to layer and shape the wool in order to get a dimensional effect. You will also use yarns to create a border around your piece with the needles. \nThe Together series at Mingei invites makers of all skill levels to come together and create in a supportive\, low-pressure environment. Past iterations—Sew Together\, Weave Together\, Dye Together\, Stitch Together\, Clay Together\, and Knot Together—explore a variety of craft techniques while emphasizing collaboration\, experimentation\, and hands-on learning. Each workshop encourages participants to connect with materials\, try new skills\, and enjoy the process of making together.

SUMMARY:Create a Skate with "Professor" Paul Schmitt
DESCRIPTION:Join Mingei for a two-day workshop led by master craftsman and Skate Craft advisor Paul Schmitt. Known as “The Professor\,” Paul has spent over forty years at the absolute vanguard of skateboard engineering. Since hacking out his very first shape in 1980 and later founding PS Stix\, he has quietly dialed in the exact templates\, concaves\, and mold tech used by generations of the world’s most iconic pro skaters. \nUnder Paul’s expert\, hands-on guidance\, you will explore the deep science of skateboard design and transform a raw material into your own custom\, skateboard deck. \nSchedule \n\nSaturday\, January 16 – Explore how form follows function as Paul breaks down the physics of wheelbase\, concave\, and taper. Using a cardboard template\, you will sketch and draft your custom shape.\nBetween sessions\, Paul will take your templates to his personal workshop to expertly cut\, route\, and prepare your custom maple deck.\nSaturday\, January 23 – Head back to the Museum to pick up your custom-cut deck! You’ll use hand tools to sand your board\, then bring it to life with custom stencils\, Sharpies\, paint\, and stickers.\n\nRecommended for ages 14+.
