To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA
Sep 12, 09 thru Nov 2, 10
Launching this fall, the San Diego Air & Space Museum pays tribute to the 40-year anniversary of Apollo 10 with an exploration of Snoopy’s special role in the “dress rehearsal” mission for the Apollo 11 lunar landing. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA traces the intrepid beagle’s trip to the moon through historic artifacts, comics, memorabilia, and models.
In May 1969, Apollo 10’s lunar module, named “Snoopy,” scouted the moon’s surface for an optimal landing site for the Apollo 11 astronauts while the command module, “Charlie Brown,” orbited above.
Naming Apollo 10’s vehicles after Peanuts characters was an outgrowth of a special relationship between NASA and Charles M. Schulz’s popular comic series that had begun one year prior (and continues to this day). In 1968, NASA instituted the Silver Snoopy Award to acknowledge outstanding efforts that ensure the success of human space flight missions.
Offering an accessible way to teach children about NASA’s early moon missions, To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA features a one-third scale model of the Apollo command module from the Johnson Space Center, an original Apollo-era flight suit, the actual image of Charlie Brown that was flown aboard Apollo 10, and a March 1969 Peanuts comic strip series in which Snoopy makes his own lunar landing (even beating Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin!). A Silver Snoopy pin that was flown to the moon is also on display.
The exhibition concludes with a creative play area where kids can dress up in astronaut costumes and imagine their own lunar missions.
