India Thompson reflects on ownership and emotional attachment through intricately woven reed sculptures, transforming everyday domestic objects into meditations on home in the age of renting.

India Thompson: Looks Like Home explores emotional attachment to the ordinary domestic objects in the places we call home in the age of renting. By meticulously weaving works from reed, the artist creates versions of her apartment’s contents, unpacking what it means to live in a space that is not legally hers. Thompson transforms familiar, perhaps oft-overlooked, forms we depend on in our daily routine—such as a microwave, toilet, or refrigerator—into poignant sculptural pieces.

India Thompson (b. December 20, 1995, Los Angeles, CA) is a multidisciplinary artist based in San Diego. While ceramic is her primary artistic medium, this exhibition_ _highlights Thompson’s exploration of basketry– a time-consuming process the artist describes as one of “care and memory-keeping.” Her humorous and tender sculptures show us how craft remains a powerful storytelling medium as well as a reminder of the importance of basketry across cultures.
